Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a statutory framework overseen by the Department for Education. It sets the standards for the development, learning and care of children from birth to the end of the primary school reception year. Early years providers such as ourselves are required by law to follow the EYFS.
Areas of Learning
The EYFS lays out three prime and four specific areas of learning. The prime areas of learning are Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development; and Communication and Language. The specific areas of learning are Literacy, Mathematics, Expressive Arts and Design; and Understanding the World.
There is a strong emphasis on promoting development in the three prime areas of learning, especially in the first three years of a child's life.
Finding Out More
If you would like to find out more about the EYFS then we would encourage you to either speak to us or to view the information on the Department for Education site or the Foundation Years site. The Foundation Years site is a good source of information and has some good resources targeted at parents. The What to expect when page on the Foundation Years site is also a useful resource for parents.
